About this course

Participants paint from direct observation of still-life objects, making both quick studies and more extended paintings. Demonstrations and tutor-led discussion introduce approaches including colour washes, tonal underpainting and expressive brushwork. The course combines individual painting with group discussion and regular detailed feedback. It also examines how different painters use particular techniques, while giving participants opportunities to develop work through reworking and sustained observation.

What you'll learn

  • Create a tonal painting using a limited palette
  • Generate colours through different painting techniques
  • Apply expressive brushwork and gestural marks
  • Paint from direct observation of still-life subjects
