About this course

The course introduces traditional and modern upholstery methods used before and after 1945. Participants work on a small, relatively simple piece of furniture while learning how upholstery materials and tools are used in practice. Teaching takes place in a workshop setting, with progress considered through Personal Learning Plans, written practice notes and regular discussions with the tutor. The project provides an opportunity to apply the techniques introduced during the class, although completion may require additional study depending on progress.

What you'll learn

  • Identify materials used in traditional and modern upholstery
  • Use upholstery tools in a workshop setting
  • Apply basic reupholstery techniques to a small piece of furniture
  • Record and discuss progress through a Personal Learning Plan

Is this course right for you?

This course is specifically designed for absolute beginners, including learners with no previous upholstery experience. Participants work individually on a small furniture project, such as a dining chair or footstool, and should be prepared for practical workshop activity. A project may not be completed within the class and could require further study.

  • Bring a fairly simple, small piece of furniture suitable for reupholstery
  • The project may require a further Monday course to reach completion

Before you go

  • Participants must bring a chair or other suitable small piece of furniture.
  • Participants need to bring fabric and braid if required for their project; other materials are provided.
  • Sensible closed-toe shoes and work clothes are strongly recommended for the workshop.
