About this course
The course examines abstraction through practical exercises, artist studies and personal experimentation. Participants explore colour relationships, composition, mark-making and surface development, using layering, collage, stencils, resist techniques and varied tools to create texture and visual impact. Structured guidance is combined with timed exercises, gestural drawing, reflective activities and peer discussion. The course also considers major abstract art movements and artists, helping participants analyse influences while developing a personal visual language and a cohesive body of abstract work.
What you'll learn
- Apply colour theory, including complementary, analogous and triadic relationships, to abstract work
- Develop compositions using space, rhythm, balance, contrast, scale, orientation and cropping
- Build varied surfaces through layering, mark-making, collage, gesso and impasto techniques
- Combine mixed media, stencils and resist methods to create depth and complexity
- Analyse selected abstract artists and art movements as sources of influence
- Develop a personal visual language through experimentation, reflection and recurring marks, themes and colours
