About this course

Participants develop individual abstract painting projects around changing themes such as colour, picture space and chance. Sessions explore line, tone, composition, colour mixing and paint application through experimentation with different techniques and materials. The course also considers historical and contemporary abstraction, including Cubism, and relates the work of influential artists and movements to participants’ own practice. Teaching combines tutor demonstrations and individual verbal feedback with discussions, informal group critiques and a Personal Learning Plan for setting and reviewing goals.

What you'll learn

  • Develop abstract painting projects from thematic starting points
  • Experiment with line, tone, composition, colour mixing and paint application
  • Relate the work of abstract artists and movements to personal painting practice
