Abstract Painting

About this course

The course introduces abstraction through practical painting activities and themed investigations. Topics include materials and methods, the relationship between abstraction and the human figure, non-traditional approaches to landscape, and connections between painting, poetry and music. Term 2 includes some sessions with a life model. Learners develop ideas through briefs and independent projects, while reviewing work together at the end of classes. They are also encouraged to photograph their work, reflect on their development and share finished pieces in an informal end-of-term exhibition.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for beginners as well as more experienced artists. The beginner label suggests an introductory level, while the teaching allows learners to bring their own ideas and approaches. Participation combines independent project work with group reviews and reflection.

Before you go

• Materials are supplied for the first session of each term.
• Learners are expected to provide their own materials for the rest of the term. A full materials list is issued at the first session; this generally includes basic acrylic paints and brushes.
• Paper is free, while learners are encouraged to use canvas and other surfaces.
• Learners are encouraged to collect materials and objects related to their painting.
• There is no formal or required homework, although learners are encouraged to work on projects and ideas in their own time.
