About this course

Participants develop abstract painting ideas from observed sources such as photographs, found imagery and objects, as well as non-visual stimuli including music and words. Projects address composition, simple colour theory, surface and texture, and individual exploration. Teaching centres on practical painting activities, with contextual background and tutor-led group discussions. Two approaches are introduced: direct, edge-to-edge painting and indirect painting, in which a project develops through layers. Learners regularly review and compare their findings during the course.

What you'll learn

  • Explore two different approaches to developing abstract paintings
  • Apply composition techniques and simple colour theory to extend a painting enquiry
  • Combine colours and tones with greater control
  • Experiment with textural marks and three-dimensional texture in paint
  • Review and discuss the development of paintings using group feedback

Is this course right for you?

This improvers’ course is intended for learners who already have some painting experience, including colour mixing and basic paint application. It may suit those with around 30 hours of general painting study, even without previous experience of abstract work. The course involves practical painting, individual project development and participation in tutor-led group discussion.

  • Some prior painting experience is necessary
  • Learners can approach abstraction without having studied it previously
  • The course includes discussion and comparison of work within the group

Before you go

  • An A4 sketchbook is useful for planning ideas, recording colour notes and building reference.
  • The tutor may suggest simple resources to bring for individualising project work.
