About this course

The course focuses on academic conventions and Standard English, with activities involving reading, developing and discussing different forms of writing. Participants practise academic speaking and presentations, including responding to questions from other students, while working individually, in pairs and as a whole group. Sessions also address grammar, punctuation, style and study skills. Learners use internet-based resources and other technology to support language development, and receive regular detailed feedback from the tutor. Writing tasks include planning and producing a personal statement or essay, followed by proofreading and revision.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for learners at Level 2 or C1 and above who are on, or preparing for, Access programmes or university entrance. The Advanced (C1+) label indicates work beyond fundamental English skills. Participation includes group, paired and individual activities, with regular English practice and homework expected.

  • An assessment and discussion with a teacher are required before enrolment.
  • The course is not intended for proofreading coursework from another college or university.
  • Good attendance, regular English practice and completed homework are identified as important for progress.

  • Bring lined A4 paper or a notebook, a pen, a pencil, a rubber and an A4 file.
  • A smartphone or tablet will be useful in class.
  • Regular English practice and completion of homework are expected.
