About this course

The course develops playing with open chords, simple melodies and a range of strumming and picking patterns used in folk and pop songs. Sessions combine tutor explanations and demonstrations with group tuition, playing alongside other participants and group performance. Learners receive regular feedback while working on rhythm, plectrum technique, chord changes and lead riffs. The musical material includes rock and roll and AOR rhythms, alongside introductory notation, rhythm representation and other basic music theory symbols.

  • Use varied strumming patterns to accompany songs, including rock and roll and AOR rhythms
  • Develop plectrum technique for acoustic guitar
  • Apply rhythm skills while playing chords and melodies
  • Read and play A, E major, F major 7, A7, D7, E7 and B7 chords
  • Interpret basic notation, rhythm representations and music symbols
  • Play a simple lead riff

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for improver-level players who already have some acoustic guitar ability, including knowledge of simple chords, strumming and picking patterns. The source indicates an expected level equivalent to around two terms of experience. Participants should also be prepared to practise regularly between classes.

  • Includes group tuition and group performance
  • Requires short practice sessions between classes, at least four times a week
  • Learners play to and with others in the class

Before you go

  • Participants need to bring a 6-string acoustic guitar.
  • Bring an A4 folder, notebook or progression diary, pencil and eraser.
  • Sheet music and learning resources are provided.
  • Learners are expected to practise for 10 to 15 minutes at least four times a week between classes.
