About this course

The course examines how Shakespeare’s verse and prose, language, and textual devices can inform performance choices. Participants analyse monologues and scenes, then use practical exercises to investigate character and interpretation. Teaching combines individual work with pair and group activities, leading to rehearsal and in-class performance of Shakespearean scenes or monologues. The class also considers physical characterisation and the relationship between textual clues and performance decisions.

What you'll learn

  • Analyse a Shakespearean monologue or scene for performance clues
  • Use verse, prose and textual devices to inform character and performance choices
  • Develop physical choices for portraying a character
  • Rehearse and perform a Shakespearean monologue or scene
