About this course

Participants design and make individual kiln-formed glass objects while investigating advanced casting processes. The course covers master model and mould-making, lost-wax and core-casting methods, cold-working applications, specialist materials, kiln firings and kiln programming. Teaching combines presentations, discussion, demonstrations, practical workshop work and regular feedback. Learners develop self-directed projects in consultation with the tutor, evaluating and refining their work throughout. Progress is reviewed through observation, with a group presentation at the end outlining the development of each project.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for experienced glassmakers developing advanced casting skills and working towards individual projects. Learners are expected to work independently in a specialist studio while taking part in demonstrations, discussions, ongoing feedback and a group presentation of their project development.

  • Previous experience working with glass is required.
  • Projects are individually directed rather than completed as a shared class piece.
  • The course includes a presentation to the group at the end.

Before you go

  • Learners are expected to purchase their own kiln-formed glass materials. Additional materials and small tools may also be needed for individual projects.
  • Basic adapted workshop tools are available, and glass and other materials can be bought from the provider.
  • Bring a sketchbook or notebook and drawing materials such as pencils, pens or marker pens.
  • Sturdy shoes, boots or trainers must be worn, with no open sandals. An apron is also required.
