About this course

The workshop explores playwriting through premise and theme, character motivation, dramatic structure, dialogue and scene construction. Participants develop their own work through writing exercises, dramaturgical sessions and in-class readings, followed by discussion and critique from the group and tutor. Professionally produced playscripts are also analysed to examine established writers’ techniques. Teaching combines lectures, seminars, discussion and practical work, with craft topics addressed in relation to participants’ drafts.

What you'll learn

  • Develop a fuller understanding of the playwriting process from initial idea to first draft
  • Apply dramaturgical techniques to character, motivation, structure and individual scenes
  • Produce a new draft of a short or full-length play
  • Analyse playscripts and evaluate choices in dramatic writing
  • Use critical feedback to assess and revise playwriting work

Is this course right for you?

This advanced workshop is intended for writers developing beyond introductory playwriting, including learners continuing from earlier playwriting study. New participants may join with previous writing experience and a strong interest in theatre. Sessions involve group discussion, feedback and sharing written work, alongside a good standard of written and spoken English.

  • Previous writing experience is expected for new participants
  • Participants should be prepared to discuss and share their work with the group
  • The course suits learners working on a short or full-length play draft

Before you go

  • Bring writing materials.
  • Set texts may be recommended but do not necessarily need to be purchased.
  • When work is being read in class, provide several copies of the scenes written at home.
