About this course

The workshop focuses on redrafting poems, extending technical approaches and developing a more mature poetic voice. Sessions combine tutor-led discussion with consideration of contemporary poetry, theory and structure. Participants share their own work for detailed feedback from the tutor and group, and examine how their writing relates to current poetic practice. The course also includes reading poems aloud and responding critically to poetry, with attention to sensitive content when work is shared.

What you'll learn

  • Edit and revise poems with greater precision
  • Explore approaches and techniques used in contemporary poetry
  • Relate personal work to a wider contemporary poetry context
  • Offer and respond to detailed critical feedback on poetry
  • Develop a more distinctive and mature poetic voice

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for more experienced poetry writers, with the advanced label indicating work beyond introductory techniques. Participants should have an established writing practice and be prepared to bring poems to a group setting for discussion and critique.

  • The source recommends at least a year of writing poems
  • Participants are expected to share their own work with the group
  • The course involves detailed peer and tutor feedback

Before you go

  • Bring paper and a pen or pencil.
  • Bring copies of poems to share with the class; these are returned after the reading.
