Improver

An Improver-level preparation course covering core maths, problem-solving and exam techniques before progression to GCSE Maths.

About this course

Lessons combine explanations, discussion, practice exercises and assessments to strengthen mathematical foundations. Topics include calculations with integers, fractions and decimals, geometry, measures and the application of maths to real-life problems. Participants also practise reading, writing, speaking and listening in the context of mathematical word problems. Regular homework reinforces classwork, with Mathswatch providing assignments, lesson resources, video tutorials, interactive worksheets and online feedback. An end-of-course assessment is used alongside attendance and coursework review to inform possible progression to GCSE Maths.

What you'll learn

  • Apply addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to integers, fractions and decimals.
  • Use knowledge of shapes, angles, perimeter, area, volume and measures to solve problems.
  • Apply mathematical reasoning and problem-solving strategies to a range of challenges.
  • Use Mathswatch to complete assignments and access online learning resources and feedback.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for learners preparing to begin GCSE Maths who want to develop their skills first. The Improver label suggests study beyond the most basic level. Enrolment includes an initial assessment and interview, and participants should be prepared for regular homework, class participation and substantial independent study.

  • Applicants are expected to have Functional Skills Level 1 in Maths and English, Key Stage 3 Maths or an equivalent level of study.
  • At least 90% attendance and punctuality are expected.
  • Learners should allow around 10 hours each week for study and homework.

Before you go

  • A Casio FX-83GT CW scientific calculator, or a similar FX-83GTX or FX-85GTX model, is required.
  • Learners need writing materials, a notebook and a geometry set.
  • A computer or tablet with an internet connection is required for online assignments and homework; a mobile phone alone is not sufficient.
