About this course

The course develops observational drawing through practical exercises focused on line, contour, negative space, measuring, basic perspective, tone and shading. Learners also explore mark-making, geometric forms, composition and colour work through still-life activities. Teaching includes individual verbal feedback, discussions and informal group critiques, where participants share work and receive constructive responses. Learners also work with the tutor to create a Personal Learning Plan, identifying goals and tracking progress during the course.

The course is presented as suitable for all levels and explicitly welcomes complete beginners. The source also notes that some prior knowledge of art materials, tools and techniques may make the experience more beneficial. Participation includes individual work, discussions and sharing work in group critiques. Learners must be aged 19 or over.

Before you go

  • Bring a notebook, pencil and apron.
  • Basic materials are covered, but additional materials may need to be purchased.
  • Paper is available to buy in class.
  • Some tools can be borrowed, although learners are encouraged to build their own collection with advice from the tutor.
  • Carers may be eligible for additional support.
