About this course

The course examines how poetry has developed and how poets use language, form and other techniques to create meaning. Poems from the last 400 years provide material for discussion, with particular attention to modern poetry and writers including Robert Frost, Charlotte Mew, T. S. Eliot and Claudia Rankine. Teaching combines tutor presentations, close reading, analysis, small-group activities and seminar discussion. Participants can read poems aloud if they wish, while the group considers questions about poetry’s purpose, rhyme, rhythm and lasting qualities.

What you'll learn
