About this course
The course traces the development of Welsh national identity across four connected areas: language and culture; radicalism and nonconformism; twentieth-century nationalism; and contemporary nation-building within Britishness. Topics include the historical role of Welsh poetry and Bible translation, education and religious radicalism, Plaid Cymru, language activism, broadcasting, language legislation and current debates about unionism and separatism. Teaching combines illustrated lectures with group discussion and analysis of historical texts and media. Comparisons with other nationalisms are included, alongside consideration of language policy, agriculture, ethnic diversity and the future of Welsh identity.
