Anodise Niobium

About this course

The workshop introduces the theory and applications of anodising refractory metals, with demonstrations of dip, sponge, brush, masked and relief anodising. Participants practise on small pieces of niobium and titanium, exploring how different methods produce varied colours and finishes. The experimental work informs a final design on a 3-inch square niobium sheet, with guidance available during the anodising process. The session includes discussion, presentation and individual making time.

Is this course right for you?

The workshop is intended for beginners, including those starting out or with little to no experience. Participation combines demonstrations, discussion, individual experimentation and guided making, so learners can develop a design through practical work.

Before you go

• Bring reading glasses if needed, design or drawing ideas, a notebook or sketchbook, and drawing materials.
• Participants may bring their own metalworking equipment, such as gravers or texture punches and hammers, if they want to apply those skills.
• Wear casual clothing that can become dusty or damaged, avoid long loose sleeves, wear flat closed-toe shoes, and tie back long hair.
• Most of the workshop is step-free at street level, but some specialist equipment is in a lower-level workshop accessible only by stairs.
• Additional niobium may be available to purchase for further experimentation after completing the main piece.
