Appraising jewellery and gemstones

About this course

The course introduces methods for examining gem-set jewellery and gemstones, including loupe use, hallmark interpretation, precious metals and basic jewellery construction. It also covers common gemstones, certification, treatments, synthetics and imitations. Teaching combines talks, demonstrations, projected images, question-and-answer sessions and practical exercises. Examples of jewellery and gems are examined in class, with discussion of antique periods such as Victorian, Art Nouveau and Art Deco, along with ways to recognise reproductions and assess potential problems when buying.
