About this course

The course compares current economic policies in the United States and other developed countries with the form of capitalism associated with the Industrial Revolution. It examines protectionism, state intervention, financialisation, inflation, wealth inequality, central banks and the growth of global debt. Sessions also consider how emerging technologies might reinforce or challenge existing economic structures, possible responses including global taxation and Modern Monetary Theory, and whether capitalism can reform itself or requires more fundamental change. Teaching combines tutor presentations, slides and class discussion.

What you'll learn

  • Analyse the relationship between financialisation, inflation, wealth inequality, central banks and debt.
  • Assess whether emerging technologies may reinforce or disrupt existing economic arrangements.
