Art History: A Scandinavian Vision of Modernity – Painters of Sweden 1850 – 1920

About this course

This course examines Swedish art from 1850 to 1920, considering how industrialisation, social change and national identity shaped painting. It places Swedish artists in relation to European centres including Paris and Munich, while exploring Stockholm’s art world and artistic communities such as Varberg and Grez-sur-Loing. Sessions use an informal lecture and discussion format, with presentations shared on screen. Topics include Naturalism, plein-air painting, Symbolism and early modernism, alongside the work of artists including Anders Zorn, Carl Larsson, Hilma af Klint and Isaac Grünwald. Discussion also considers relationships between artists, collectors and institutions.
