Art History: How to Look at Paintings – Gallery Visits

About this course

The course examines paintings by artists including Van Eyck, Leonardo, Dürer, Artemisia Gentileschi, Rembrandt, Turner, Monet and others. Learners consider how artworks relate to the societies that produced them, why certain images became celebrated, and the stories behind less familiar works. Teaching combines informal lectures, discussion, group activities, mindful observation and interactive questions. Participants develop ways to read images, use art-historical vocabulary, and examine visual features such as composition, symbolism, perspective and optical effects without relying on specialist jargon.

The course is intended for complete beginners and does not require prior knowledge of art history. It suits learners willing to take part in discussion, group activities and close observation of paintings. Sessions involve some standing and walking, although long walks and prolonged periods in front of individual works are avoided.
