Art History: The Politics of Craft in Contemporary Art

About this course

The course examines how textiles and ceramics have been positioned within Western art history and how artists have used these media to question cultural and political power. Sessions combine illustrated lectures with close analysis of artworks and discussion of supporting art-historical texts, including ideas explored in Rosita Parker’s The Subversive Stitch. Topics include post-war artists such as Sheila Hicks, Eva Hesse and Ruth Asawa, alongside contemporary practices addressing feminist, queer, post-colonial and indigenous perspectives. The course concludes with a gallery visit.
