About this course

This course examines selected artists and artist groups working in Britain from 1980 through to the YBAs at the start of the new millennium. It considers practices spanning painting, sculpture, mixed media and photography, alongside the social, cultural and political issues shaping each decade. Each week focuses on up to two artists or groups, asking what was innovative about their work and how they challenged established ideas of British art. Teaching combines illustrated lectures with group discussion, supported by handouts available digitally through Google Classroom.

What you'll learn

  • Relate the work of selected artists to social, political and cultural issues affecting each decade.
  • Explain the working methods and media used by at least one artist from each period studied.
  • Describe formal visual elements and artistic styles in two or three artworks examined on the course.

Is this course right for you?

The course is suitable for learners at all levels and is taught through lectures with slide images and group discussion.
