About this course
The course examines how artists in Britain since 2000 have challenged established ideas through their subjects, approaches and use of materials or media. Each session focuses on up to two artists or artist groups, considering the social and cultural issues influencing their work and what makes it forward-thinking. Teaching is delivered through lectures with slide images, alongside opportunities for group discussion. Artists covered include Victoria Cantons, Mark Wallinger, Zineb Sedira, John Akomfrah, Marguerite Humeau, Mark Titchner, Elsa James, Haroon Mirza and Lawrence Lek.
What you'll learn
- Identify social, political or cultural issues influencing the work of at least one artist since 2000.
- Explain the working style and media used by at least one artist studied.
- Describe formal visual elements or approaches to materials in two or three artworks.
Is this course right for you?
The course is intended for learners at all levels, including those approaching the subject without a specified level of prior study. Participation combines lecture-based teaching with group discussion, and learners should be able to follow written and verbal instructions, demonstrations and health and safety information.
