About this course

The course develops steps and combinations in Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango, Cha-Cha, Rumba and Jive, with attention to ballroom and Latin dance technique. Sessions combine tutor demonstrations, verbal instruction, observation and question-and-answer activities. The tutor may demonstrate with a learner and work with different dancers during the class, while revision and consolidation are included before new material is introduced.

Is this course right for you?

The course is primarily intended for improvers who know the basic steps in the six listed dances, while confident beginners and more advanced learners may also join. No formal entry requirements are stated, but participants should have reasonable fitness for dancing. Learners may enrol alone or with a partner and will be asked to change partners during class.

  • Basic familiarity with the listed ballroom and Latin dances is relevant
  • Participants should be comfortable changing partners during class
  • Reasonable fitness is advised for the dance activity

Before you go

  • Wear comfortable shoes with smooth soles; leather soles are recommended.
  • Avoid flip-flops, slip-ons and heavy boots. Suede-soled dancing shoes may be beneficial but are not required initially.
  • Practising between classes may help reinforce the material.
