About this course

Participants learn to create and edit short Word documents such as letters and forms, with attention to text formatting, page layout, headers, footers and simple tables. The course also covers inserting and resizing images, using spell and grammar checks, printing documents correctly, organising files and protecting their security. Teaching follows step-by-step tutor guidance, with opportunities to practise tasks individually, in pairs and in groups. Learners also use Google Classroom for work outside the class and access to online materials.

What you'll learn

  • Identify the main features of the Word window and use essential document functions.
  • Create, open, save and organise Word files, including letters and basic templates.
  • Edit text and apply formatting such as font changes, colour, emphasis and alignment.
  • Set document layouts, including page orientation, headers, footers and simple tables.
  • Insert, resize and position images within a document.
  • Check documents for errors, print them accurately and maintain file security.

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for learners at beginner level who want to develop their Word skills. Familiarity with Word is not assumed, but participants should already have basic digital skills before starting. Sessions include individual work, pair and group activities, and some work outside class.

  • No previous familiarity with Word is assumed.
  • Basic computer and digital skills are needed before joining.
  • Participation includes working independently as well as with pairs and groups.
  • Some work is completed outside the classroom using Google Classroom.

Before you go

  • Bring a pen, lined A4 paper and a file for keeping course work.
  • Handouts are provided.
  • A Google Classroom code is provided for communication and access to online materials and videos.
