About this course

The course introduces the rhythm and basic steps of East Coast Swing, with some elements of Lindy Hop. Participants develop leading and following technique through turn variations, passes and dips, progressing towards more involved combinations. A structured syllabus means each session builds on earlier material rather than operating as a standalone drop-in class. Partners rotate during the class, giving participants opportunities to practise both sides of the dance.

What you'll learn

  • Perform the basic Rock Step and core Swing rhythms
  • Use turn variations as a leader or follower
  • Execute passes and dips within Swing patterns
  • Combine steps, turns and other movements into longer sequences

Is this course right for you?

This Level 1 course is explicitly designed for complete beginners, including people with no previous dance experience. It involves rotating partners and practising both leading and following techniques within a progressive group class.

  • No dance experience or prior knowledge is required
  • A partner is not needed to join
  • Partners rotate during the class
  • Each session builds on material from earlier sessions

Before you go

  • Smart-casual clothing and comfortable shoes are recommended.
  • Small heels or leather-soled shoes may be preferred for dancing, while stilettos, heavy boots and trainers with a very strong grip should be avoided.
