About this course

Participants rehearse a varied selection of pieces chosen by the conductor, exploring jazz styles and the roles of different instruments within a large ensemble. Sessions include full-band playing and occasional section work, with attention to sight-reading, jazz phrasing, syncopated rhythms and simple improvisation over chord sequences. Teaching combines conductor-led rehearsal, teacher feedback and ongoing self-evaluation. The course also includes work on playing as part of a section and an informal performance for friends and family.

What you'll learn

  • Apply jazz phrasing and syncopated rhythms when playing ensemble parts
  • Improve sight-reading of simple jazz arrangements
  • Perform the role of an instrument within a large jazz ensemble and section
  • Rehearse and play with other musicians in a big band
  • Improvise over simple chord sequences
