About this course

Participants practise printing from processed black-and-white negatives in a darkroom, working through techniques such as contact sheets, photograms and test strips. The workshop also covers using filters to control contrast, along with dodging and burning. Demonstrated processes are practised during the sessions with ongoing tutor support. Beginners are introduced to essential printing skills, while more experienced participants can explore specialist processes and work at a suitable pace.

Is this course right for you?

The mixed-level format is intended for beginners as well as learners with existing black-and-white printing experience. Beginners can develop fundamental darkroom skills, while more experienced participants can refine their practice and explore specialist processes. Participants practise demonstrated techniques and work at a pace suited to their level.

Before you go

• Participants need to bring their own black-and-white negatives for printing.
• Black-and-white photographic paper is required; it can also be purchased in the darkroom on the first day.
• Black-and-white film processing may be possible during the course, but not in the first session.
