Improver

An improver-level ensemble course exploring blues history, group playing, improvisation and solo accompaniment for instrumentalists and singers.

About this course

The course traces the blues from its origins through different historical periods, using each era as a basis for playing and discussion. Participants develop blues solos through harmony and transcribed blues language, while also practising how to accompany other soloists effectively. Teaching combines group music-making, listening and analysis, demonstrations, discussion, individual practice and online supporting materials. Practical rehearsal techniques are introduced for both personal preparation and ensemble work, with ongoing verbal and written feedback based on playing activities.

What you'll learn

  • Trace key developments in the history of the blues
  • Apply blues harmony when creating improvised solos
  • Use transcribed blues language in improvisation
  • Accompany blues solos effectively within an ensemble
  • Use practice and rehearsal techniques for individual and group playing

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for singers and instrumentalists who are confident in their playing or singing and have basic ensemble skills. Participation involves regular group music-making alongside individual practice and preparation between sessions. A brief interview with Performing Arts Department staff takes place before enrolment.

  • Places are available for selected rhythm, melodic and vocal roles, with less conventional blues instruments considered individually.
  • The ensemble has a stated limit of 12 participants, unless the tutor approves a larger group.
  • Learners are expected to review practical work from previous sessions to prepare for playing with the band.

Before you go

  • A keyboard, drum kit, some percussion instruments, microphones and amplifiers are available for use during sessions.
  • Instrumentalists other than those using the provided equipment need to bring their own instruments.
