About this course

The course introduces hand bookbinding through demonstrations and practical exercises. Learners explore book structures, functions and terminology while practising ways of working with adhesives, papers and cloths. Teaching covers the handling and use of bookbinding tools, equipment and materials, supported by group discussion, one-to-one tuition and regular tutor feedback. The course focuses on developing foundational craft skills and understanding how different materials and book components contribute to a bound book.

The course is intended for beginners and is also suitable for learners revisiting bookbinding after previous study. Participation combines demonstrations, practical individual work, group discussion and one-to-one tuition. No previous experience is required.

  • Learners should discuss any physical issues affecting work in a standing position before enrolling.

Before you go

  • If available, learners may bring a notebook, pencil, rubber, metal ruler, craft knife, bone folder and scissors.
  • Materials and tools needed for the course can be bought at the first and subsequent classes; the tutor can advise on requirements.
