About this course
The course develops Level 1 British Sign Language across everyday topics including meeting people, numbers, weather, transport, directions, home, interests, food and drink, and getting around. Learners practise understanding and producing simple signs, conversations, descriptions and directions. Teaching combines interactive activities, conversation practice and one-to-one feedback, with resources available through Google Classroom. The course leads to the Signature Level 1 Award in BSL, comprising three units. Learners have the opportunity to take the assessments for these units during the course; passing all three is required for the full certificate.

Is this course right for you?
The course is intended for learners working towards Level 1 BSL and involves interactive conversation practice, individual feedback and practice outside class. Written self-evaluations and examination instructions mean that basic literacy is needed, alongside the Signature competence standards for producing and receiving BSL.
- No interview is required, and direct enrolment is available.
- Homework includes practising BSL outside class.
- Signature standards refer to sufficient sight, manual dexterity, and facial and body movement for producing and receiving BSL.
