Calligraphy for beginners

About this course

The course introduces the principles of calligraphy and the use of a broad-edged parallel pen. Participants work through structured exercises that develop from basic pen patterns to lowercase and capital letterforms, numerals and punctuation. They will also examine pen angle, letter and word spacing, and the construction of guidelines. Teaching combines group and individual demonstrations with examples and worksheets, allowing participants to practise at their own pace. The course includes composing a short quotation, with additional lettering sizes, layouts and nib sizes covered for improvers or more advanced learners.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for complete beginners and for learners refreshing earlier calligraphy skills. It is suitable for both left- and right-handed participants. Learners take part in group discussions and demonstrations as well as individual practice, and should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions.

Before you go

• Participants need to purchase an A3 folder for handouts and worksheets, a 3.8mm Pilot Parallel pen, a pencil and a notebook.
• Advice is provided on tools and materials for practice between sessions or further study.
