Calligraphy: illumination and gilding

About this course

The course introduces the history and styles of illuminated lettering before moving through practical gilding methods. Learners trace and design letters, test different gilding sizes, apply gold leaf, and use gouache or watercolour for decoration. Raised gilding covers the preparation and application of gesso, followed by smoothing and burnishing. Teaching combines discussion, demonstrations and supplied examples, with learners working individually or in small groups and receiving tutor guidance and feedback. Writing is not included, as the course focuses exclusively on illumination techniques.

The course is suitable for complete beginners and learners with some experience. Participants work individually or in small groups after demonstrations and need to follow simple written and verbal instructions, including health and safety information.

• No previous calligraphy experience is identified as necessary.

• Learners are expected to work from demonstrations and examples.

Before you go

• Most materials are provided in class.
• Learners need to bring a nylon or sable pointed brush in size 0 or 1, 2H and HB pencils, a good eraser, and an A4 folder to protect their work.
• Glasses or a magnifying glass may be useful.
• Material advice is provided during the first session.
