About this course

The course examines historical and contemporary copperplate and Spencerian examples, focusing on letterform construction, proportion, rhythm, spacing and layout. Learners analyse scripts and practise exercises designed to improve line contrast, consistency and writing speed, while exploring modern variations that retain clarity. Teaching combines group demonstrations, worksheets, supported practice and individual guidance. Each learner develops a personal or professional calligraphy project with tutor support, shaped around their existing skills and chosen area of focus.

What you'll learn

  • Analyse the structure, proportion and movement of copperplate and related scripts
  • Control line weight, spacing, rhythm and writing speed in pointed-pen work
  • Apply key characteristics of modern copperplate and Spencerian letterforms
  • Adapt copperplate forms for contemporary calligraphy while maintaining clarity
  • Produce a finished piece demonstrating developed pointed-pen writing
