Calligraphy: Spencerian scripts

About this course

The workshop introduces Spencerian script, including its fine hairline strokes, irregular shadowing, letterform construction and page layout. Teaching combines group and individual demonstrations, tutor exemplars, worksheets and guided exercises, with feedback on regularity and fluency. Participants will also examine historical and contemporary calligraphy, discuss examples as a group and analyse an historical script. Depending on individual skill level, the course includes a finished project such as a card, poetry panel, stationery, personal alphabet or decorated artwork.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for complete beginners and for learners refreshing their calligraphy skills. Activities include individual practice alongside demonstrations, with voluntary group discussions. Learners should be able to follow simple written and spoken English instructions, read handouts and understand health and safety information.

• Worksheets allow exercises to be completed at an individual pace
• Group discussion participation is voluntary

Before you go

• Some materials, including cartridge paper, pens, erasers and inks, are provided.
• Bring a Speedball 2968 Oblique pen set, A3 pencil HP and layout paper, and a notebook.
• From the second session onwards, learners are expected to bring their own materials.
• Learners who are unsure what to buy can wait for the tutor's demonstration and purchasing guidance.
