Carving in wood or stone

About this course

Participants develop carving ideas by studying wood and stone, looking at historical and contemporary sculpture, and making small clay maquettes before starting a piece in their chosen material. Demonstrations introduce carving methods, which are explored as the work progresses. Teaching combines practical activities, group discussions and individual tuition. The course also covers safe working practices and tool maintenance, while learners with more experience can test more experimental techniques and refine their designs.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for all abilities, including complete beginners and experienced carvers. Beginners are guided through the process stage by stage, while those with more experience can extend their ideas, review their designs and explore experimental techniques. Participation includes demonstrations, practical work, group discussion and individual tuition.

• No sculptural experience is needed to be guided through the process from the initial idea onwards
• More experienced carvers can use the course to develop designs and try experimental techniques

Before you go

• A piece of wood or stone may be selected from the provider's stock with tutor advice; its cost is included in the course fee.
• Tools are provided. Rifflers may be purchased optionally for working on detail.
• Participants should bring a sketchbook, pencils and a pen for sketches and notes. A camera or smartphone is useful for documenting work in progress.
• Sturdy, closed-toe shoes are required; old work clothes or overalls are recommended.
• Personal protective equipment is provided and must be worn when required, including facemasks when working with dusty or airborne materials.
