About this course

The workshop develops castanet technique alongside the rhythms and musicality used in flamenco and classical Spanish dance. Participants practise stamping, clapping and movement patterns, with and without castanets, and respond to Spanish and flamenco rhythms through movement and rhythmic accompaniment. Teaching combines tutor demonstrations, guided repetition, practical exercises, discussion and feedback. The session also includes the opportunity to learn a short classical Spanish dance choreography incorporating castanet playing.

Is this course right for you?

The workshop is aimed at improver, intermediate or advanced flamenco, classical or regional Spanish dancers who already have some knowledge of castanet work. Participation involves physical dance and castanet exercises, including movement, stamping and clapping. Exercises can be adjusted to accommodate particular physical or learning needs.

Before you go

  • Participants should bring castanets, although the tutor can lend castanets to students.
  • Flamenco shoes for women or flamenco boots for men are requested, along with a flamenco skirt for women or movement-friendly trousers for men.
  • A fitted top, notebook and screw-top bottled water should be brought to class.
  • A video of the workshop is provided for continued practice at home, and some practice outside class is included.
  • Class activities may be photographed or filmed for learning and promotional purposes; participants can consent to or decline this.
