Cello workshop

About this course

The workshop develops cello technique and musicianship through scales, arpeggios and technical exercises in keys up to three sharps and two flats. Participants work on shifting, positions up to thumb position, reading bass, tenor and treble clefs, vibrato, posture and tone production. Teaching combines tutor explanation and demonstration with group work on studies and solo or ensemble repertoire. Short individual masterclass-style sessions take place within the group, with feedback from the tutor and classmates. Bow work includes legato, staccato and portato, alongside attention to musical style, dynamics and varied tone.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for cello players working at around Grade 4 standard or above, so it is designed for learners beyond fundamental beginner techniques. Participants need to work collaboratively in group playing while also taking opportunities to perform solo. Written and verbal instructions in English and class discussion are part of the course.

• Regular practice between classes is described as essential for progress

Before you go

• Participants need to bring their own cello, bow, case, pencil, rosin and spare strings.
• Musical materials are provided through Google Classroom.
• A practice routine of at least 30 minutes, five times per week, is recommended.
