Ceramic Focus: Surface Decorations with Onglaze Media

About this course

This course explores onglaze surface decoration using ceramic transfers, lustres and enamels. Participants examine how these third-firing techniques can add colour, pattern and surface detail to white china or glazed ceramic pieces, including through self-designed transfers. Teaching combines demonstrations, question-and-answer sessions, and individual and group guidance. The practical work develops understanding of ceramic and glaze surfaces, basic technical language, firing temperatures and the sequence of processes involved in applying decals, onglaze enamels and lustres.

Before you go

• Wear clothes that can get dirty and closed-toe shoes.
• Bring a pen and notebook.
• Learners may bring their own clay tools; pottery tools are also available to use.
• Work is kiln-fired at approximately 750–830°C.
