About this course

Learners develop a ceramic wall-art piece from research, sketches and design development through to construction and presentation. Teaching combines demonstrations, practical workshop activities, individual projects, one-to-one guidance and question-and-answer sessions. The course explores slab building, relief work, joining, impressing, carving, mark-making and texturing. Learners also investigate surface decoration with slips, underglazes, oxides and glazes, considering how form, texture, colour and composition contribute to a finished piece.

What you'll learn

  • Develop ideas for ceramic wall art through research, sketching and design planning.
  • Construct wall pieces using slab building, relief work, joining, carving and texturing techniques.
  • Apply surface decoration using slips, underglazes, oxides and glazes.
  • Plan and produce an individual ceramic wall-art piece from concept through construction and decoration.
  • Evaluate and present finished work while discussing the creative process and techniques used.
