About this course

Participants are introduced to ceramic studio processes and develop several hand-building methods, including press moulding, slab building, pinch pots and coiling. Projects include a press-moulded bowl, slab-built objects and small vases, with opportunities to refine surfaces and add decorative textures. The course also covers glaze application and uses demonstrations, printed materials, class discussions and tutor feedback. Learners create a Personal Learning Plan and keep written records of their practice and development.

What you'll learn

  • Use press moulding, slab building, pinch-pot and coiling techniques to make ceramic forms.
  • Apply decorative textures and other surface treatments to clay projects.
  • Explain the purpose of glaze and apply glaze to ceramic objects.
  • Follow relevant studio processes for making, refining and glazing work.
  • Record clay types, techniques, glazes, firing temperatures and dimensions in a practice record.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for complete beginners and learners with limited experience. The Beginner (A1) label indicates an introductory level, while practical sessions, demonstrations, discussions and individual tutor feedback shape participation. Learners will also set goals and review their development through a Personal Learning Plan.

  • Suitable for learners with no previous ceramics experience.
  • Includes regular discussion and individual feedback.
  • Requires participation in studio activities and maintaining a record of work.

Before you go

  • Clay must be purchased from the college shop. Slip, glazes and kiln firings are included in the clay purchase.
  • An FFP3 mask is required for glazing activities and can be purchased from the technicians' office.
  • Ceramic tools are provided.
  • Finished pieces require drying and firing before collection, typically taking several weeks in total.
  • Learners are encouraged to keep a sketchbook or digital record of their work.
  • Food and drink are not allowed in the studio, and learners should allow time at the end of each class for tidying.
