About this course
The course begins with a group visit to the British Museum, where participants examine selected objects, research their context and choose sources for a ceramic response. Back in the studio, they develop forms influenced by themes such as cultural identity, mythology, symbolism and personal messages. Teaching combines group and individual demonstrations, tutorials and learning through making. Participants use sketchbooks or visual diaries to record research and develop ideas, while exploring hand-building and decorating techniques. Home work on visual ideas is optional.

Is this course right for you?
This improver-level course is intended for learners with some previous experience of working with clay who want to develop their ceramic practice further. Participation includes a group museum visit, discussion and individual studio work. Learners should be able to follow written and verbal instructions, demonstrations and health and safety guidance, and take part in self-reflection.
- The course includes group discussion around selected museum objects.
- Visual research and idea development at home are optional.
Before you go
- Closed shoes must be worn in the ceramics studio.
- Tools are available for use within the department, and most material costs are included.
- There is an opportunity for work to be fired and glazed.
- Learners with pacemakers or internal defibrillators cannot work in the ceramics studio when potter’s wheels are in use because the motors may pose a serious risk.
