About this course

Participants learn to make drop-off plaster moulds and use slip casting and press moulding to create bowls and other ceramic forms. The course also explores clay and slip decoration, glazing techniques, clay types and relevant health and safety considerations. Teaching combines demonstrations, individual tutor guidance and feedback. Learners develop a Personal Learning Plan and maintain a working journal or digital record containing sketches, technical notes and details of their making process.

The course is designed for learners at all levels, including beginners and those extending existing skills in ceramic form and surface decoration. No formal entry requirements are stated. Participation involves practical making, demonstrations, individual guidance and maintaining a record of work.

Before you go

  • Clay must be purchased from the college shop. Slip, glazes and kiln firings are included in the cost of the clay.
  • Ceramic tools are provided, and the tutor advises on suitable clay types for each project.
  • An FFP3 mask is required for glazing activities and can be purchased from the technicians' office.
  • Work above 28cm high × 38cm wide × 28cm deep or over 5kg incurs an additional firing charge.
  • Learners should allow 15 minutes at the end of each class for tidying up. Food and drink are not permitted in the studio.
