Ceramics Focus: Wheel Throwing Week Intermediate and Advanced

About this course

The course focuses on refining wheel-throwing control through centring, opening and pulling up clay. Demonstrations and activities accommodate left- and right-handed placement, while participants with more experience can request group or individual demonstrations. Learners explore lidded forms and pieces made from two or more thrown elements, including how to assemble them. Introductory glazing and safe studio practice extend the work across the ceramic process. Teaching combines tutor demonstrations, peer learning and resources including handouts, examples, books, videos, slideshows and suggested exhibition or gallery visits.

Is this course right for you?

The course is described as more suitable for students with experience of throwing and is aimed at learners developing beyond fundamental wheel skills. New and returning students may work alongside one another, with group and individual demonstrations available. Full attendance and punctuality are expected across the sessions.

• Previous wheel-throwing experience is favoured.
• Learners participate in a shared studio environment.
• Individual demonstrations can be requested by more experienced participants.

Before you go

• Bring an apron or old shirt and closed-toe shoes.
• A pen and notebook are requested.
• Personal clay tools may be brought, although studio tools are available; beginner tool packs may also be purchased.
• The ceramics studio has lift access.
• Bisque and glaze firing are provided for completed work.
