Ceramics for all levels: introduction to mould making and slip casting

About this course

Participants explore mould-making methods for press-moulding and slip casting, then develop slip-cast forms through assembling and decorative techniques. The course combines tutor presentations, demonstrations, group discussion, learner knowledge-sharing and one-to-one feedback. Work is developed at an individual pace, with opportunities to review personal aims and projects with the tutor. There is no formal assessment or required homework, although learners may pursue independent research and project development outside class.

Is this course right for you?

The course is designed for complete beginners as well as learners with previous ceramics experience. An all-levels label indicates that participants may be working at different stages, with teaching adapted through demonstrations, individual guidance and learner-paced project work. Discussion and sharing work with peers are also part of the course.

Before you go

• Basic tools and equipment are provided, although learners are encouraged to build their own tool set.
• Learners should bring an apron or wear suitable clothing for studio work.
• The college offers clays, slip-casting clays, stains, underglazes and underglaze pencils.
• Only work produced at the college can be fired.
