Ceramics for Wellbeing

About this course

This practical ceramics course introduces hand-building methods including slab building and coiling, alongside slip decoration and glazing. Participants explore different clay types, make one or more pieces or test pieces, and consider how decoration and firing affect the finished work. The course also covers glazing-related health and safety. Learning is guided by tutor feedback, regular progress discussions and a Personal Learning Plan. Participants are encouraged to document each piece in a sketchbook or digitally, recording materials, techniques, glazes, firing temperatures and approximate dimensions.

Is this course right for you?

The course is designed for beginners and also suits learners with some previous experience who want to revisit simple ceramic techniques. Participants work at their own pace within a practical workshop setting, keep records of their work and discuss progress with the tutor.

Before you go

• Clay must be purchased from the college shop. Slip, glazes and kiln firings are included in the clay cost.
• Learners taking part in glazing activities require an FFP3 mask, available from the technicians' office.
• Ceramic tools are provided.
• Finished pieces usually require drying, bisque firing and glaze firing before they are ready for collection.
• Food and drink are not permitted in the studio, and learners should allow time at the end of each class for tidying.
