Ceramics Hand-building and Decorating Techniques for Beginners & Improvers

A beginner-level ceramics course covering hand-building, surface decoration, glazing and studio processes through practical sessions.
About this course
Participants learn hand-building methods including press moulding, slab building, pinch pots and coiling, applying them to objects such as bowls, bud vases and architectural or household-inspired forms. The course also introduces surface decoration, texture and glaze application, with no wheel-throwing facility included. Teaching combines demonstrations, printed information, practical studio work, class discussions and tutor feedback. Learners use Personal Learning Plans to set goals and review their development, while improvers can begin or continue individual projects.

- No prior experience is required
- Suitable for learners developing beyond fundamental hand-building techniques
- The course focuses on hand-building rather than wheel throwing
Before you go
- Clay must be purchased from the College Shop; slip, glazes and kiln firings are included in the clay cost.
- Ceramic tools are provided.
- An FFP3 mask is required for glazing activities and can be purchased from the technicians' office.
- Non-slip, closed footwear is strongly recommended in the ceramic studios.
