About this course

Participants refine handbuilding and throwing techniques through projects including lidded pieces, cups and saucers, plates, pierced vessels, enclosed forms, large bowls and altered forms. The course also introduces surface decoration methods for functional and decorative ceramics. Teaching combines practical studio work with personal learning plans, tutor discussions and written feedback. Learners develop project ideas while reviewing their techniques and recording progress against their individual goals.

What you'll learn

  • Refine handbuilding and wheel-throwing techniques
  • Construct lidded, enclosed, pierced and altered ceramic forms
  • Develop cups, saucers, plates and large bowls
  • Apply surface decoration techniques to ceramic work
  • Evaluate and document techniques, materials and firing details

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for learners aged 19 or over who already have basic handbuilding or throwing skills. The Intermediate label indicates that it is aimed at people developing beyond fundamental techniques rather than starting from scratch.

  • Previous basic ceramics skills are expected
  • Learners work on individual goals through personal learning plans
  • Progress is reviewed through written records and tutor discussions

Before you go

  • Clay must be purchased from the college shop; slip, glazes and kiln firings are included in the clay cost.
  • An FFP3 mask is required for glazing activities and can be purchased from the technicians' office.
  • Ceramic tools are provided.
  • Learners are encouraged to keep a sketchbook or digital record of their work, including photographs and details of clay, decoration, glazes, firing temperatures and dimensions.
  • Finished work is collected after drying, bisque firing and glaze firing.
  • No food or drink is allowed in the studio, and learners should allow time at the end of each class for tidying.
