Ceramics Handbuilding Workshop

About this course

Participants learn handbuilding through pinch pots, coiled vessels and slab-built objects, using techniques such as incision, slip decoration and burnishing. The course also covers mould use, refining forms, clay types, decorative approaches and glazing methods, including an induction to the glaze room. Learners repeat techniques to develop refined pieces and may work on themed or self-directed projects according to their experience. Teaching includes individual tutor guidance, regular discussions and a Personal Learning Plan, with progress recorded through written notes and tutor feedback.

Is this course right for you?

The workshop welcomes complete beginners and does not require previous experience. Learners with more experience, including improvers and advanced participants, can develop individual projects or respond to themed work with tutor guidance. Participation involves making pieces independently, discussing progress and setting goals through a Personal Learning Plan.

Before you go

• Materials and kiln firing arrangements are explained in the first class.
• Participants may bring their own materials, but on-site storage is limited to items purchased through the college.
• Food and drink are not allowed in the studio; a nearby hub area is available for snacks and drinks.
